EDITOR’S NOTE
A goal for Today in Menswear in 2026 is to start developing a framework for buying clothes. Nothing dogmatic or culty, of course. It’s just that as the newsletter approaches its third year, I’ve wrapped my head around what I think is worth showing you all, and what is just fluff.
I think the idea to work on is 'slow buying.' Slow buying in my head is the following process:
You independently notice a gap in your wardrobe, or something in need of a replacement. Your jacket doesn’t fit, your shoes break, you move cities and need a new pair of warm pants, etc.
You educate yourself about the menu of options in the category
You identify the best options (material quality, timelessness of style, reputation of brand, etc.)
After ample time spent sitting on your top choices, you get the highest quality version of the category you can afford
You have no need to consider any purchases in this category for years to come, and become impermeable to marketing or envy about said category.
The point of this is to slow down, be proactive with and educated about your purchasing decisions (as opposed to reacting to marketing pushes), and use your dollars to buy quality stuff that lasts.
We’ll see how this develops. I view TIM’s role in slow buying as steps #2 and #3. To provide a steady current of quality products. If I impact even one of your purchasing decisions in a positive way, I will be happy.
Anyway, let’s tap into today.
LUXURY
Chunky Nordic Knits
This merino and cashmere polo from Berg & Berg has a rich texture from being knitted on a low-gauge machine, with Italian yarn that's 90% wool and 10% cashmere. The polo has no buttons on the placket yet still holds its collar shape, while ribbed cuffs and hem give it structure. Made in Portugal with a soft hand feel, the brown shade pairs well with corduroy or wool pants for fall.
British wool gets the brush treatment in Berg & Berg's take on the shaggy sweater that's been a staple since mid-century. The saddle shoulder and high neckline give this navy piece its classic shape, while the brushed finish creates texture and warmth. Made with pure wool in Portugal, the mid-weight knit works alone or layered under a jacket.
OFFICE WEAR
Two nice polos on sale
Sunspel built this polo from Egyptian cotton in a linear mesh stitch pulled from their archives, giving the fabric texture while keeping it smooth on skin. The Milano collar sits clean without curl, while the regular fit gives room to move without being boxy. Made in Portugal from long-staple cotton, the golden brown shade works with navy, grey, or tan pants.
The Riviera uses Supima cotton from California farms in a mesh fabric that Sunspel first made for the French Riviera in the 1950s before tailoring it for Daniel Craig's Bond. The extra-long staple cotton makes it light and breathable, while the slim fit keeps the silhouette clean. Made in Portugal (lot of Portuguese manufacturing today, huh?), the fog grey color reads neutral enough for dress codes but has more depth than basic white.
STREETWEAR
Two Casual Pants
Left Field's lounge pants come from hand-loomed fabric in India, where the cotton is khadi-spun on a spinning wheel to create slub texture (read: lil’ bit lumpy). The natural indigo gets dyed by hand-twisting yarns in the dye bath, while metal Left Field buttons secure the fly. Cut and sewn in California with an elastic waist, these embrace wabi-sabi with fabric quirks that make each pair unique.
These Work Uniform jeans use 13-ounce broken twill denim in brown, with a 1940s-style bell-shaped brass zipper. The slash pockets include a coin pocket, while double half-lined patch pockets sit on the back above Coal Miner bandana pocketing. Cut and sewn in the USA, then washed and hot dried, the brown broken twill has more texture than standard denim weaves.
FORMAL WEAR
Oversized Formal
Eat Dust made this double-breasted blazer with a wool blend that's 61% viscose, 20% poly-cotton, 11% polyester, and 8% wool for cold-day structure. The oversized, boxy fit and soft shoulders make it more casual than most blazers, while big front pockets and a small chest pocket add utility. Made in Portugal, the anthracite color works as a neutral that reads less formal than black or navy.
This cardigan blends 35% polyester, 24% mohair, 24% acrylic, and 17% wool into a fleece that has texture and warmth. The V-neck and two front pockets give it a classic shape, while the boxy fit makes it easy to share or layer. Made in Portugal with a button closure, the java brown color has depth from the mohair blend.
WORKWEAR
Fantastic Boot…
Railcar teamed with White's Boots in Spokane to design these all-black oil tan leather boots built on the .55 last. The Vibram creme wedge sole keeps them light, while brass speed hooks and gunmetal eyelets add hardware contrast against the brown-edge midsole. Handmade in White's 150-year-old plant with Milwaukee leather, these have a leather insole, arch shank, and counter heel that make them fully rebuildable when the sole wears down.
ONE LAST THING….
