EDITOR’S NOTE
S/o to our brothers and sisters in Europe enduring a heat wave right now. In New York we’re rocking with mid 70s and sun 😍 Happy fricken’ Friday, everybody.
Anyway, let’s tap into today.
LUXURY
Italian Cashmere and Merino
Italian cashmere and merino made by hand from Fedeli in Milan. Think of Fedeli like Loro Piana minus all the branding. (And if that doesn’t sound like luxury, what does?)
Fedeli cuts this shirt jacket from a piece-dyed linen with an oxford weave, giving the cloth a slight texture and a depth of color that flat-dyed linen rarely has. The shirt-jacket shape keeps it out of blazer territory — collar, placket front, patch pockets — so it sits over a tee or tucks into a trouser without asking much of the wearer. Resin buttons keep the finish quiet. Made in Italy at the Monza factory the family has run since 1934.
The knit shirt blends cashmere and linen into a fabric that sits between a sweater and a dress shirt — lightweight enough for warm weather, with enough body to hold a clean line. The construction is knitted rather than woven, so it moves with the body and skips the stiffness you get from a traditional dress shirt. A collar and button placket keep it shirt-coded while the cashmere content gives the hand a softness that linen alone doesn't reach. Made in Italy.
WORKWEAR
Levi’s in Dark Mode
The oversized chino is cut from a 100% cotton twill with a non-stretch construction, so it sits and holds its shape rather than clinging or riding up. The fit is baggy through the seat and thigh and tapers slightly at the ankle, which keeps the silhouette from going fully shapeless. A zip fly and waist-height rise round out the basics.
The Trucker Jacket has been the same since 1967: 100% cotton midweight denim, point collar, branded metal buttons, and the tapered V-stitching on the chest that makes it recognizable at a distance. The standard fit sits close without being tight, and the black Berk Night wash skips the indigo fading in favor of a cleaner, darker read. It layers over a tee or a light knit and doesn't ask much else of you.
STREETWEAR
SSBDs
(Short-sleeve button downs)
Neighborhood builds this Hawaiian shirt from a poplin woven with polyester spun yarn, which gives it more drape and a softer hand than a standard woven synthetic reads on paper. The cut is relaxed without going full resort, and the open collar keeps things easy. Chain-stitched logo at the left chest and original buttons are the only details that remind you this isn't a thrift find. Tokyo label, moto roots, shirt that looks like neither.
The Stripe Work Shirt starts with a high-density 100% cotton stripe cloth finished to resist wrinkling, so it holds up through a full day without looking worn out by noon. An open collar and short sleeve keep the silhouette casual, while a buttoned chest pocket with embroidered logo above it pulls the workwear reference without leaning into costume. A one-wash finish means the color and hand are already broken in when it arrives.
FORMAL WEAR
Warm Weather Trousers
The Penso trouser is woven by Zignone in Italy from a blend of virgin wool, silk, and linen, which gives the fabric a natural slub texture and a bit of sheen without looking shiny. The Prince of Wales check is classic enough to read formal and relaxed enough to skip the jacket when the room allows. Buttoned side adjusters and a hook-and-bar closure keep the waist clean and tailored. A classic fit through the seat and thigh means this one has room without going wide.
The Atlantic is cut from 100% linen in a twill weave, which gives the fabric more structure and a tighter hand than a plain linen would — it holds its line through a full day without going soft. The stone colorway sits between white and khaki, which makes it easy to pair without looking like you tried too hard. Side adjusters, slip pockets, and a hook-and-bar closure keep the details quiet. A tailored fit through the leg keeps it sharp.
OFFICE WEAR
An Office Cardigan for heavy-AC days
Velva Sheen has been making cotton basics in the US since 1932, and this cardigan is built the same way everything else is: 8oz loopback cotton jersey, cut with raglan sleeves and a v-neck, and pigment-dyed after construction so the color sits deep in the cloth rather than sitting on top. The loopback construction means the inside has a soft, raised texture against the skin while the outside holds a smooth face. Two patch pockets, ribbed cuffs, and a (large) button front keep it clean. It reads like a layer that already belongs on the back of your desk chair.
ONE LAST THING….
On Shaving
During COVID I went hard on men’s shaving content and created a setup that has endured from then til now. Gillette multi-blade stuff from CVS costs too much, and it was shredding my face without even getting a close shave.
The solution I cam to is two-fold: a German double edge safety razor with Japanese blades. Pair these two with any shave cream and you’re golden. I don’t see a world in which I can go back to pharmacy shaving equipment now that I’ve seen the light.
This is the vessel. It’s short but very sturdy — a joy to handle. This is something that would feel familiar to your grandfather’s grandfather. You buy it once and you’re done forever. (Go for the 22 C if you want something longer.)
This is your variable cost. These guys can cost as little as 25 cents a blade depending on how much bulk you go for. Made in Japan and sharp as f***, it’s a single blade going over your skin rather than the 3-5 common on pharmacy blades. I use each one 2-3 times because I’m a diva, but many people get 10+ uses per blade b/c they’re that sharp.
If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or musings about shaving, please do reply to this email and I’d be happy to hear all about it.
As always, thanks for reading!
