EDITOR’S NOTE
This edition has two household names, and two brands you’ve probably never heard of. The former (Levi’s and J.Crew) are steeply discounted right now, so they’re practical and actionable. The other two (Natalino and Cavour) are for high-quality, European-made investment pieces. Pick your poison.
Anyway, let’s tap into today.
LUXURY
Tasty British Overshirts
This overshirt has a rich brown shade and a soft washed cotton that feels broken-in from day one. The relaxed cut lets us wear it open over a tee or buttoned up for a sharper look. Twin chest pockets and neat buttons keep it clean and easy to match with most pants. We like how the brushed cotton gives it a lived-in feel without looking sloppy.
A smooth taupe color and sturdy cotton twill make this overshirt a strong pick for days when we want something easy but sharp. The fit is relaxed but not baggy, and the two chest pockets add a bit of workwear style. This one layers well over a shirt or stands on its own, thanks to the soft but tough fabric. The color goes with just about anything in our closet.
WORKWEAR
Sale: Core Levi’s
These jeans have a relaxed cut through the seat and thigh, which means we get extra room without losing shape. The classic five-pocket style and sturdy denim make them a go-to for work or weekends. We like the straight leg, which sits well over boots or sneakers. They hold up well to daily wear and keep their fit after many washes.
The 501® is the blueprint for jeans, with a straight leg and button fly that never feels dated. The fit is snug at the hips and easy through the leg, giving us that old-school look with modern comfort. Heavy denim and solid stitching mean these jeans can take a beating. We reach for these when we want something that works with boots, sneakers, or even a blazer.
FORMAL WEAR
Norwegian Footwear (Spiffy)
This shoe has soft beige suede and a slim shape that works for dressy events or smart casual days. The leather sole adds polish, while the suede keeps things relaxed but sharp. We like how the color pairs with navy or grey suits and even light jeans. The shoe feels light on our feet but still has enough structure for long days.
A dark brown suede loafer with a rubber sole means we get grip and comfort without losing the dressy look. The penny slot detail is classic, and the soft suede molds to our feet with wear. These work well with suits, but we also like them with chinos or even dark denim. The rubber sole is a nice touch for wet days or long walks.
OFFICE WEAR
Sale: J.Crew Tops
This shirt is made from 100% cotton chambray, which feels light and soft but still holds its shape. The regular fit and point collar keep it neat for the office, and it’s easy to care for—just toss it in the wash. We like the single chest pocket and the way the blue color works with khakis or dark jeans. Since it’s on sale, now is a good time to grab one for the week ahead.
This pullover sweater is on sale and has a classic fit that works well over a shirt or on its own. The knit is soft but not too thick, so we can wear it year-round. We like the simple shape and the way it layers under a jacket for cooler mornings. The sale price makes it easy to pick up more than one color for the office or weekends.
ONE LAST THING….
Reader Question: “Are you a shorts guy?”
No.
Men’s legs aren’t supposed to be displayed in public. The exceptions are if you’re going to the beach, doing an actual sport, or staying in your own house. For all of those things, basic athletic shorts get the job done. For any other situation, you should just be wearing pants.
THAT BEING SAID, there is a new crop of menswear emerging out there that’s doing interesting things with shorts. They’re experimenting with fabric (like this linen short), and importantly going far enough with length to keep thighs covered. TIM’s market research division is actively monitoring the situation.
My main gripe is that I don’t want to see men’s legs. While I appreciate that men should enjoy the right to stay cool in warm weather just like women, they do not enjoy that privilege if they’re going to create eyesores in public. So please, if you must go beyond an athletic short, opt for something at knee-length.
As always, thanks for reading!
