EDITOR’S NOTE
S/o to 70 degree days in March…. that was so lit yesterday. I’m starting to think about linen again after I sweat my a$$ off during a lunch time walk. But I’ll spare your inbox with linen for fear of jinxing Mother Nature into pushing us back to snow.
Anyway, let’s tap into today.
WORKWEAR
Heavy Pullovers
Cut, sewn, and garment-dyed in North Carolina, this 14oz cotton fleece crew is built like the thick athletic wear of decades past. The brushed inner surface traps heat while the dense outer knit holds its shape wash after wash without going boxy. A clean crew neck and ribbed cuffs and hem give it a put-together look that works just as well on a job site as it does on a couch. This one is made to go for decades, not seasons.
Same 14oz USA-made cotton fleece construction as the Navy, just in a mossy earth tone that plays well with raw denim, olive, and tan. The garment-dye process gives the color a worn-in, lived-with feel right out of the bag. Soft on the inside, sturdy on the outside, it has the weight and structure of the old school athletic wear that people now pay a lot of money to hunt down vintage. This is the one to grab if you want navy's more interesting sibling.
STREETWEAR
🔥🔥🔥
Kapital is a Japanese label that pulls from workwear, folk art, and subculture in equal measure, and this cotton crew is a good example of why people obsess over them. The low-gauge knit (think: open, textured, relaxed) is made from a cotton, acrylic, and wool mix that sits loosely on the body in a roomy silhouette. Rainbow stripes run the length of the body and peace symbols appear at the elbows, making the art feel like it grew out of the fabric rather than onto it.
This 100% cotton coverall uses two weights of denim in one piece: a heavier 11.5oz body and a lighter 8oz for the sleeves and pockets, so it has structure where you need it and ease where you don't. The defining detail is the oversized, off-center front pocket that sits at an angle, giving the whole piece a sculptural quality you don't see on standard denim work wear. Indigo dye is natural and will bleed and fade over time, which is part of the deal.
FORMAL WEAR
MTO Shirts
Oxford cloth is the go-to fabric for a button-down shirt because it has a slight texture and weave that makes it feel more casual than a dress shirt but more put-together than a tee. Kamakura cuts this one in a classic fit from 100% cotton with a button-down collar, chest pocket, and button cuffs, all made in Japan. The blue shade sits at a medium tone that works under a blazer or with chinos on its own. Our shirts rarely get better than this for the money.
The slim fit version of Kamakura's oxford shirt in white is the kind of piece that earns its keep by never being wrong. It's 100% cotton, made in Japan, with a button-down collar, front placket, and button cuffs, and the thick oxford weave gets softer and more shaped to you with each wash. White oxfords are one of those shirts where fit is everything, and the slim cut here hits a trim line without going tight.
OFFICE WEAR
Two Well-priced Cables
This 100% cotton cable-knit crew is pulled from J.Crew's vintage catalog archive and is made in what they call their "heritage cotton," a dense, compact knit that has structure and a slightly dry hand feel without being stiff. Cable knit refers to the interlocking twisted stitch pattern that runs vertically down the body, giving the sweater its textured, raised look. The indigo navy is a deep, rich color that reads as a serious navy in most light. Reviewers note it runs slightly large, so size down if you're between sizes.
Same heritage cotton cable knit as above, but this one has a cream ivory body with navy tipping at the collar, cuffs, and hem. Tipping is the contrast trim detail at the edges, which gives this sweater a sportier, more finished look than a solid. It's Fair Trade Certified, made in a verified facility, and is also 100% cotton. The ivory base is warm enough to pair back to most colors in a work rotation. Like its sibling, it runs slightly large.
